Schubert’s great symphony this weekend

The Fresno Philharmonic salutes our veterans with that most martial of all instruments, the trumpet, this Sunday, November 10th, at 3pm at William Saroyan Theatre in downtown Fresno. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s John Hagstrom (former Principal Trumpet of the U.S. Marine Band “The President’s Own”) performs Arutiunian’s spectacularly virtuosic Trumpet Concerto. The concert concludes with Schubert’s glorious Symphony No. 9, one of the grandest statements of the human spirit.

You’d never guess he was a mild-mannered second trumpeter from the hair-raising high notes…or from the way he seamlessly unfurls long lines…
