Michael Karbassi fundraiser

I had the extreme privilege of attending my very first official political fundraiser for my good friend Michael “Kia” Karbassi. It was held in one of the private banquet rooms at the Elbow Room in the Fig Garden Village. Tickets were $50 a piece and there were several big dollar tickets available as well. Guests were treated to wine, cheese, and a wide array of snacks, fruits, and nuts. For the hungrier attendees there were chicken skewers and some of the most delicious lamb I have ever tasted for sure.

For those of you who don’t know him, Michael Karbassi is running for Fresno City Council District 2. This district encompasses Northwest Fresno mostly and has long been used as a stepping stone for politicians to move up to others things. Such was the case with Steve Brandau who vacated the seat when he got elected to the Fresno County Board of Supervisors last month. I think this is one of the reasons I like Michael for this seat. He has already publicly and privately committed to not using this seat to move on to other things. If he is fortunate enough to get elected in June he commits to serving out his entire term of office. This is just one example of how he intends to serve “Northwest neighbors first!”

This is just one of the many reasons why I’ll be voting Michael come June. The race looks likes it’s going to be crowded because there are as many as 6 or 7 candidates who plan on running. Michael and his father Mike have run Persian Rug Collections on the corner of Bullard and West Avenues for well over 40 years. Michael has run for office before and he is deeply committed to local politics and local grassroots issues. He is honest, a hard worker, and isn’t looking to make a name for himself. He just wants to roll up his sleeve and get some things done. While he is socially progressive he is fiscally conservative and I think his long, successful track record in business will serve him well at City Hall.
