Gilroy remarks from our governor

I am a big fan of Governor Gavin Newsom. He has displayed true, liberal leadership as a politician for many, many years. He pushed the envelope forward on gay marriage when he was Mayor of San Francisco. He served admirably as Lt. Governor patiently waiting his turn to run for Governor. He was the only choice for me to succeed Gov. Jerry Brown.

I saw this floating around my inbox and I wanted to share it. It is his remarks about the Gilroy shootings that he sent out Monday afternoon. I thought it was really good and worth sharing…

On Sunday, a gunman walked into the Gilroy Garlic Festival in San Jose and opened fire. We lost three young people — including a six-year-old — and dozens injured remain traumatized.

Yesterday, I met with a 12-year-old who was shot while in a bounce house. A grandmother mourning the loss of her 6-year-old son. Families and friends left their homes for an enjoyable Sunday afternoon and instead faced an unspeakable mass shooting and lost their loved ones. The Gilroy shooting is gut-wrenching. It cuts deep. I am hurt. I am angry. I am still reeling from this tragic moment.

That’s our unfortunate reality of living in America, but it doesn’t have to be. Gun violence is so prevalent in our everyday lives that many folks have already moved on from this horrifying shooting. The epidemic is so widespread it isn’t a matter of if the next shooting will happen, but when it will touch our lives.

So what do we do next?

We will push forward. We will fight for safer communities. We will raise our voices for the victims. We will demand action to end the gun violence crisis. Because I refuse to stand idly by. I refuse to allow the NRA to win. We can and must press on.

— Gavin

These remarks were cut and pasted verbatim from his direct email to constituents.

I’m Gavin. We just can’t continue to allow the NRA and gun enthusiasts to hijack the discussion on public safety. In fact, if you look at any credible polling data on gun control you will find that a vast majority of both Democrats and Republicans agree on some very basic and common sense strategies. Some of these include universal background checks, wait periods for certain purchases, and closing the loopholes that traveling gun shows abuse to sale guns en masse while skirting the established laws of certain states.

Thank you Gov. Newsom for having the courage to say things are not possible and even cost you political points in some circles. It will only be fearless, tireless, and unwavering leadership to lead us to the promised land of peace, safety, and go old fashioned common sense.
