The long standing California tradition known as the Gilroy Garlic Festival ended in tragedy last night. Another mass shooting has griped the nation as a shooter opened fired on the crowd as the event was winding up. Early reports last night had the death toll at 3 with 12 injured. That has been updated today to 4 dead and 15 injured. Two of the dead were children. 🙁
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who were killed and injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with law enforcement and first responders who risk their lives every day to keep their respective communities safe from violence and harm. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire community of Gilroy as they endure the shock, trauma, and grief of yet another senseless shooting in this country.
If there is a silver lining to this dark cloud of tragedy it is this: Gilroy police have shared that officers had engaged the shooter within 60 seconds of the first shots being fired. This calms my heart just a little because that means the death toll and injury count could have been a lot worse. This also tells me there was a strong enough police presence as the crowd was dispersing to react to the active threat. There is no telling how many lives were saved because of the swift and sure response of law enforcement.
There are a whole host of great articles and information over at USA Today after the jump.
