I attended my very first Fresno Stonewall Democrats meeting last night since returning to the Central Valley from my 5-year stint in the SF Bay Area. FSD meets every second Tuesday of the month at the Marie Calendar’s on the Southwest corner of Cedar and Shaw catty-corny from Fresno State. The group usually meets for diner at 5:30pm and the meeting starts at 6:30pm. There were over 20 people in attendance last night and the guest speakers were from Philip Arballo and myself on behalf of Michael Karbassi.
Both Mr. Arballo and Mr. Karbassi are running in the special election on August 13th for District 2 on the Fresno City Council. If there isn’t a clear winner in the special election than the top two vote getters will compete in a special run off the first Tuesday in November. There will be another, regularly schedule primary election in March of 2020 which will set up the next regular election for District 2 in November. If that seems like a lot of fast and furious action…it is. The special election cycle in 2019 is the result of Steve Brandau successfully winning a seat on the Fresno County Board of Supervisors.
Plans were discussed for FSD and Fresno Pride the first weekend of June. Handouts and flyers were sent around for folks to sign up to march in the parade or man the booth at the festival. They also passed out the new buttons that were printed up that will be handed out at Pride, other marketing events, and new members. Some events and dates from other organizations (like the Clovis Democratic Club) were also announced. It was a great first meeting and I’m looking forward to getting more involved as my schedule allows. You can find out more about the Fresno Stonewall Democrats at their official website after the jump.
